Pakistan is an earthquake-prone, flood-prone, flood affected country with a variety of severe problems that include widespread poverty, illiteracy and malnutrition. The country has the world’s sixth largest population but ranks only 140th in GDP. There are also problems associated with gender inequality and lack of access to education for all people in the country. All these issues have contributed to many environmental concerns which are apparent in Pakistan today. This post was written for students who are interested in learning more about Pakistan’s environment including some key facts about the environmental challenges facing this nation today. Pakistan is a country which experiences a variety of issues related to its natural environment. Let’s look at some of the key facts associated with Pakistan’s environment. There are many environmental problems that Pakistan faces today. Let’s look at some of the most pressing environmental issues facing Pakistan today:(1) Environmental Problems In Pakistan – Air Quality & PollutionAir quality in the country has been deteriorating over the past few decades as a result of rapid industrialization and increased number of vehicles on road. Pollution levels have also been increasing as use of fossil fuels for energy generation has become widespread in recent years. A report titled “Air Quality Status Report of Pakistani Cities” was published in 2011 by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR). This report looked at air quality levels across Pakistan’s largest cities. The report revealed that most cities were failing to meet national air quality standards with Lahore being the only city which met air quality standards. The report also provided information about PM10 and PM2.5. What are these pollutants? PM10 are particles that are less than 10 micrometers in diameter which are known to cause respiratory problems. These particles are released into the air mostly by vehicles on road, biomass burning, dust storms and agricultural activities. PM2.5 are particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less. These particles can cause health problems and death if inhaled in large enough quantities. They include very small pieces of dust and particles that get into the air from industrial activities and vehicles on road during rush hour. When we look at the amount of annual pollution released into the air by vehicles on road, its number rises to 5,389 metric tons/year in 2015 which is higher than than 869 tons/year in 2001 which is itself higher than the 2,850 tons/year released in 2009 before the global economic crisis hit Pakistan. There are laws in place in Pakistan which are meant to protect the environment. One of the most important laws in place today is the Environmental Protection Act which was passed back in 1997. However, this law does not provide any specific punishment for violations of environmental law. Air pollution is not just a problem when it comes to breathing issues or other health concerns, but it is also a problem when it comes to visibility issues. Air pollution has become so bad that visibility at peaks of nearby mountains is being reduced and people have trouble seeing nearby mountains from far away distances. This is problematic for mountaineers who rely on being able to see nearby mountain ranges in order to be able to climb them successfully. eccc085e13
